Today, November 2nd, is the 68th Anniversary of three P-40 Warhawks of the 57th Pursuit Group crashing in Marin County. The US Army Air Forces 57th Pursuit Group was based at Windsor Lock (Bradley) Field, CT. The 57th flew P-40 Warhawks, the airc...

Yesterday I finally (after searching off and on since 2005) found and confirmed the crash site of the two P-40's that crashed on Baldy on 11/2/41. A while back I posted photos of what I believed at the time was the crash site, but as time went on ...

Great work Matt! Great to see that some people are coming forward with these pieces of history so many years later before they end up lost forever. Doug

I talked to Nick about the B-24, he said there isn't much left. But, he did say there was some large pieces from an F-4 that went down after a refueling accident that's near to where the B-24 crashed. The next one on my list is a P-39 on San Bruno...

What site are you looking for? Is it the B-24 that went down? "The Nipper" is about a half mile from the PBY we went to last year. SixbyFire said:Great find! I have a feeling the site I'm researching now on the peninsula might not have much more ...

Matt-

I don't know how that avatar got there -I just post a comment to you & there it was. Maybe because my membership wasn't fully setup at that time -I'll change it.

Yes, glad to meet up anytime. I usually work from home in Fairfax -except this week I'll be in SF. Weekends are usually open. I would also be willing to shoot some detailed photos of any sites for future comparison to track loss of artifacts. Or even to photo ID them in case any are spotted on Ebay.

My neighbor did mention that the Baldy crash was on the FAIRFAX side of the hill. He seemed pretty certain of that. He also implied that the crash wasn't exactly at the summit -but I need to check on that too. He's in his 80's but sharp as a tack. I'll ask him for more details -very friendly guy. I asked about the B17, but he was overseas at the time. His family owned their Fairfax property since the . . . 1800's.

Hi Matt

I'm new to this forum -but into Marin history for many years. (We have actually met a few times on Tam) I'm primarily a photographer interested in a broad range of Marin History.

I have often visited the Tam wrecks, but didn't know about the other Corsair sites. (I have been to sites 1,2 & 3 as you have them numbered) I tried to find site 4 -and visited the indicated location & the vicinity, but found no wreckage. I'm guessing that either the Google Earth "Placemark" is off (GE placemarks shift when zooming onscreen). Or Perhaps the wreckage has been removed to prevent further looting?

Any chance of getting a closer "hint" for that location? (I ONLY take photos) I do enjoy the search aspect -and would prefer a verbal hint, rather than exact GPS numbers). I understand if you prefer to keep these sites unknown -the looting of the various Tam sites is tragic.

I'd be interested in joining any upcoming visits or searches. Also willing to photograph or monitor sites. Am comfortable on rough, rocky, steep, brushy terrain (mountaineering & rock climbing experience).

BTW, I just talked a neighbor who was on Baldy the night the P40's crashed (we both live near Deer Park, Fairfax). I also hike with a friend who is a certified archeologist (investigates CalTrans sites).

Thanks,
-Nick
