MK 23 Bomb at Point Reyes

So while following up on a lead for a site out at Point Reyes I found this little guy along the shore of Abbott's Lagoon. This is a MK 23 type practice bomb, which usually housed a 10 gauge shotgun shell blank and red phosphorous. My friend who I have just started getting into wreckchasing found it along the shore and was cleaning it off when I stopped him and realized what it was. On October 4th, 1945 US Navy F4U-1D Bu# 50391 and FG-1A Bu# 13858 of VF-82 out of Alameda NAS collided at 10,000 ft over the Rock Spring area of Mt Tamalpias, while practicing the “Thatch Weave.” Both pilots, Ensign Vincent Daley and Lt. (jg) Charles W. Ankerberg, bailed out successfully, although Daley was bad injured.This Saturday, October 8th, I am planning on re-visiting the site.
